What if you were the only one who lived with an affliction that no one else had to live with? Tom does but he always sees the silver lining in his situations.
One in seven billion people suffer from a rare disease called “directionitis,” a fictitious condition that ails our wide-eyed and whimsical interviewee, Tom, played by Colin Waitt, in this mockumentary.
Even with the explanation that he randomly changes direction while walking, the different scenarios in which he switches direction creates unintended, but sometimes hilarious, consequences. What could be mistaken as blatant shoplifting, overt cold feet when approaching an attractive woman at a bar, or flagrant avoidance of someone on the streets, the results are always funny.
It’s not until Tom speaks about his love life and how he can’t seem to pin down a steady relationship, because of how many dates that he’s stood up, does he take an introspective gaze.
With a short-lived somberness, he continues to see the bright side of his situation like his aptitude for speed dating, his ability to travel and see new places, never being tied down, and having physically bumped into someone who is now his girlfriend that keeps him on the straight-and-narrow.
